Shelf Check Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 2026
The short version
Shelf Check is a free tool for educators and librarians. It has no accounts, no ads, no trackers, and no analytics. We don't collect or sell personal information.
Photos and barcodes you scan
When you scan a barcode or snap a book cover, the image or code is sent to our server only to identify the book and check it against our database. Photos are processed in memory to answer your search and are not stored, saved, or shared.
Feedback you choose to send
If you use the "Suggest an update" or "Report a technical issue" forms, we store only what you type into the form (such as a book title, a description of the issue, and your email if you choose to include it). This information is used solely to maintain the database and fix problems. It is never shared or sold.
Services we rely on
To identify books, Shelf Check uses Open Library (openlibrary.org) for barcode lookups and an AI service to read cover photos. These services receive the barcode or photo needed to answer your search, and nothing else.
Children
Shelf Check does not require an account and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes and questions
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page. Questions or concerns? Use the "Report a technical issue" link on the home page, or reach out via our Ko-fi page at ko-fi.com/shelfcheckapp.
